Statics: Lesson 54 – More Difficult Frame Problem

Ready to step up your engineering mechanics game? In Lesson 54 of engineering mechanics statics, we are tackling a more difficult frame problem that features a uniformly distributed wind load acting on a signpost structure. This advanced frame analysis problem is a classic exam favorite because it combines trigonometry, load conversion, and multiple interconnected members.

First, we will use basic trigonometry ($\tan(30^\circ)$) to solve for the unknown missing dimensions of the frame. Next, we will convert the $80\text{ lbs/ft}$ distributed wind load into a single concentrated point load ($1723.8\text{ lbs}$) and find its exact line of action. We will then calculate the global equilibrium support reactions, identify the hidden two-force member, and completely “blow the frame apart” using separate Free Body Diagrams (FBD) to solve for all internal pinned connections on member DEF. Perfect for your structural analysis and FE exam prep!

03:21 – Using trigonometry ($\tan(30^\circ)$) to find unknown frame heights

05:22 – Converting distributed wind load to a concentrated point load

07:12 – Calculating global equilibrium support reactions ($F_y$ and $A_y$)

10:48 – Identifying Member CD as the unique two-force member

11:36 – Blowing the frame apart into separate individual FBDs

19:16 – Taking a moment at Point B ($\Sigma M_B = 0$) to solve for member CD force

21:51 – Taking a moment at Point F ($\Sigma M_F = 0$) on member DEF for pinned force $E_x$

25:22 – Using vertical and horizontal equilibrium to find remaining pinned forces ($F_x, E_y$)
