「Learn Japanese」 How-to ask for and give advice with たら-Form Verb + (いいですか/どうですか)?

This grammar construct is used to ask for and offer advice as to what course of action to take. The general line for asking advice is どうしたらいいですか? which translates to “What would be good to do?” in which どう means “what” or “how,” したら is the たら-Form of the verb する, and いいですか is the familiar phrasing that means “good” with an interrogative tone.

Overall, this dual-set of grammar patterns is very similar to the た-Form VERB + 方がいい in that it asserts an action that should be done. The nuance that たら-Form Verb + どうですか and たら-Form Verb + いい carry as opposed to た-Form VERB + 方がいい is that they are softer suggestions, translating to something along the lines of “how about doing VERB?” and “it’d be good if you did VERB” respectively as opposed to “you should best do VERB.”

Example(s):

頭が痛いです。どうしたらいいですか?
Atama ga itai desu. Doushitara ii desuka?
(My head hurts. What should I do?)

すぐに寝たらいいですよ。
Sugu ni netara ii desuyo.
(It’d be good if you went to sleep at once.)

ジャケットを忘れてしまいました。どうしたらいいですか?
Jacket o wasurete shimaimashita. Doushitara ii desuka?
(I forgot my jacket. What should I do?)

あ、私のジャケットを借りたらどうですか?
A, watashi no jacket o karitara doudesuka?
(Oh, how about borrowing my jacket?)
